This has to be one of the most comprehensive guides for parents that you can find. It takes a refreshingly different approach by presenting its material in such a way that it seems to be delivered directly to you in person (love it or hate it!). Think U know for parents

This is part of the CEOP (Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre) website, the UK's focus for tackling the sexual abuse of children. They are part of the UK police and are the force behind the "Report Abuse" button that you see on many websites including Digitalparents. Click on it and you, or your child, can make a direct report to the police. This website also provides information on grooming, chat, social networking, mobiles, gaming and internet safety tips. This is a fun and highly visual introduction to social networking aimed at kids 6-14 years of age. Chidren need to be able to read and youngsters will need help (& parental consent via e-mail) to get started but I suspect you will have trouble tearning them away once they get going. Membership is free although you can subscribe to more options for a fee. The site is very clear and concise and the parents page provides a good sense of security for the protection of our kids. This site describes itself as 'kid-tech news for parents'. It is essentially a series of blogs that are published on a daily basis highlighting issues and stories that have a technology / family / child safety connection. Most of the stories originate in the USA although that doesn't proclude hot topics like the Byron review in the UK featuring as well. You can subscribe to a weekly e-mail newsletter or a daily RSS feed of 'hot off the press' information which includes useful links to topic related sites. Go button

GetNetWise is a public service project of the Internet Education Foundation, provided by Internet industry corporations and public interest organisations. The site aims to help ensure that Internet users have safe, constructive, and educational or entertaining online experiences. Their focus is mainly on kids safety, spam, security, privacy and they usefully cover 'tips', 'tools', 'take action ' for each category. The 'how to video tutorials' are very clear and informative to use and cover a huge range of subjects from 'make social networking more private for youth safety' through to spyware, spam filtering and privacy/browsing tools. ConnectSafely is a site originating in the USA and claims that 'smart socialising starts here'. Formerly known as Blogsafety.com, the site is aimed at parents, teens, educators, and experts and is predominantly promoting a forum for discussion and learning about safe blogging and social networking, in their words they are 'social networking about social networks'! There is also other infromation such as safety tips and advice, tips en espanol, commentaries, news, videos, supporters, links, powerpoints etc. Go button

This is the 'common sense' answer to an 'internet survival guide for parents'. The site utilises its clean and concise format to explain e-mail, IM, chat rooms, blogs, social networking, web surfing, downloading, online gaming etc and provides a positives, negatives and general comment along with common sense tips for each topic. There is also a useful 'Get Safety tips' section with information for kids, parents and teachers and the opportunity to download a full safety guide to 'Keeping your kids internet safe and smart' and a tips card to print off and keep next to the computer. Myspace have looked at safety issues for parents and teens. They provide information on cyberbullying, talking to teens, tools and downloads, setting up and deleting profiles, saftey tips and settings. There is also the opportunity to contact Myspace directly if you have concerns.
