Facebook Privacy - for parents

Social Networks and Facebook in particular can be a minefield for the naive. Most have retro-fitted privacy measures that mean you need to go back and activate them.

Great article (via The Unofficial Facebook Blog) about what you should look out for:

  1. Use friend lists to separate out groups of people that can see your profile in full (eg: people in your class and home friends)

  2. Remove yourself fro

Video Republic - 6th October 2008

‘This pamphlet charts the rise of a ‘Video Republic’ – a new space for expression created primarily by young people.’

There is no doubt that as young people spend less time watching television (1 hour per week less in the UK) they are choosing to en

mashed up - a technology overview of digital parents

The re-branding of digitalparents has been fun and has completed a process that I started earlier in the year. Having visited a number of primary and secondary schools, it became clear I could speak at a school, 3 nights a week for the usable part of every term and still not reach a material number of parents.

Instead I decided to build a resource for parents that could be used just as well by people talking to parents. Having followed the launch of n… Continue

Ice hockey coach jailed for affair with schoolgirl - Telegraph

(Via . BBC Radio Berkshire)

Tomorrow I am going on the radio talking about this story that basically comes down to a father checking up on his 15 year old daughter only to discover that she is having an affair with her ice hockey coach.

As a father it makes you want to wrap your

Dear Toby:

Thanks much for the welcome comment.
I am currently living and working in a developing country as you can see.
A good addition to the site I believe would be tips for parents who themsleves are not computer literate. I know this sounds like a tall order - but I think it can be done - and it could help a lot more preants become 'digital' parents...
Let me know your thoughts

Hi Toby.
Thanks for the welcome, and I'll certainly talk to my local infant school about this site.
As I've said I'm an IT professional who has a good knowledge of the internet and it does scare me as to the lack of control the majority of parents seem to take with regards to this technology. Whilst spying isn't a great word, I do think parents should be more proactive and any assitance that can be given to help them is very welcome.
I do think that perhaps a dedicated area that looks into all types of technologies available to parents might be a good idea. Each has it's pro's and con's, mostly con's from what I've seen! I'm an advocate of the product I use and, whilst I have not found anything to warrant further investigation, it is a very useful tool to enforce our rules on internet usage. Without it, I would not allow my 3 children to have thir own computers.
Anyway, thanks again and I hope the community increases really soon.

Hi Toby, Mel's off getting her hair done for a photo and will sign up, we were just talking about how we stop Oscar, who would spend his entire life watching Tardis clips on YouTube, from getting into parts of the ether we don't really want him to be in.
